Fun, Fluid, Fitness! (TM)
Summer Session Begins June 23 - Aug. 20
(No Classes, July 21 and 23, on Statutory Holiday Aug. 4, 11 and 13)
The Chemagne Dance Program combines years of experience as a dancer and yoga practitioner, with the love of dance and movement. The program incorporates techniques from a range of dance forms. The different dance and movement influences that are integrated into the Chemagne Dance Program are:
- African, Indian and Latin dance
- Pilates
- Jazz
- Hatha/Kundalini Yoga
- Continuum Movement
- Pole Dance Fitness
The clases are designed to increase flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles (especially arms, hips, thighs, glutes and abdominals), and improve fluidity of movement, coordination, posture, upper- and lower-body muscle isolation, and balance.
Classes begin with a warm-up to awaken the body and prepare for more vigorous activity. Movement repetitions build on strengthening technique while increasing skill level and style. Each class session will focus on a theme, such as hip circles, figure eights, wave undulations, shimmies, arm movements, and travelling steps. At the end of each class, we’ll combine the various movements into a fun and energetic Choreography (sequence of techniques) or Combination (simultaneous techniques).
Bellydance Level 1
Beginners – Absolutely no previous dance experience required!
This class is designed for everyone, including those with no previous bellydance training. In this class students will be introduced to the fundamentals of bellydance movement
and technique.
Students will learn posture and alignment, muscle awareness, hip work, isolation of upper-body movements, and balance awareness. Specific techniques include hip circles, figure eights, 2 basic wave undulations, hand gestures, 5 basic arm placements, and 5 basic travelling steps.
Each class will conclude with a fun Choreography or set of sassy Combinations, putting into action what we learned that session. We recommend that students build a solid foundation in this level before moving on to Level 2.
Bellydance Level 2
Intermediate – Some previous bellydance experience suggested
This class is designed for anyone who has taken some bellydance classes previously, or a student who feels comfortable to move to the next level.
Dance at Level 2 will be more challenging, but very exciting as students increases their skills. The class builds on what was learned in Level 1. Students focus on improving technique and performing travelling steps while doing hip work. More complex movements will be introduced, including different variations and combinations of figure eights, circles, waves, and shimmies. In addition, students will be introduced to layering – combining two movements at the same time with different body parts – and rhythmic transitions linking moves one after another.
At the end of each class, we’ll combine movements from that session into a fun and challenging Choreography or freestyle Combination.
